Though
BIS has set a vide range of parameters to confirm to BIS-13428: 2004, and BIS
: 14543:2004, a palatable and safe water poses a big challenge for water treatment
professionals due to varied parameters of borewell across India , since these
are the major source of raw water for the industry.
There are various equipment / filters like
sand bed filter, Activated carbon, micron filtration, Reverse
Osmosis, Ozonation, Ultra Violet , and these are generally
used in combination to process the water.
Water treatment or
purification requires few steps. Untreated water is mixed with chemical known
as coagulants. The most common coagulant is aluminium sulfate or alum. Alum forms
sticky globs called flocs in water. These globs attach themselves to bacteria
and other impurities. Pumping the water into a settling basin result in sinking
the flocs and contaminants to the bottom. This step leads to the eradication of
impurities from the water. This water is then passed through a filter due to which
the remaining particles are screened out.
The water treatment
plant focuses on the removel of microbial contaminants that cause typhoid, dysentery,
and cholera epidemics. The treatment results in offering the consumer with absolutely
safe ad pure drinking water.
